ASCII Frame

Privacy policy

Local rendering.
Conservative claims.
No video uploads.

ASCII Frame is a Chrome/Chromium extension and static website for turning supported browser video into live ASCII visuals. This policy describes what the extension and website are designed to collect, process, and avoid collecting.

Short version

  • ASCII rendering happens locally in your browser.
  • The extension does not upload video frames for ASCII rendering.
  • DRM-protected video is never sampled, and DRM streaming sites are not supported.
  • Preferences are stored in browser extension storage so your selected renderer, theme, charset, profile, and site settings can persist.
  • Other protected or browser-restricted streams may also block frame sampling; compatibility is not guaranteed for every service.
  • The public website is static and has no account system, payment flow, upload flow, comments, or backend runtime.
  1. Extension processing

ASCII Frame runs inside supported browser pages and reads video pixels only when the browser allows frame sampling. It uses those pixels to draw an overlay in the page or in the extension-owned local video viewer. The rendering path is local browser processing, not a hosted video-processing service.

Some protected, DRM, cross-origin, or browser-restricted videos cannot be sampled by extensions. When that happens, ASCII Frame should fail gracefully instead of pretending support exists.

  2. Extension permissions

The current Chrome/Edge release path uses permissions for extension preferences, toolbar/manual activation, script injection on supported video pages, and quick menu actions. The current development manifest also lists specific video-site host patterns plus local-file handling so the extension can run where a content script is expected.

Final Web Store permission text may change before publication. This policy and the landing page should be updated if the published manifest changes, especially if host access is narrowed or broadened.

  3. Preferences and browser storage

ASCII Frame stores settings such as renderer, detail, frame-rate cap, theme, charset, custom theme values, profiles, and per-site preferences in browser extension storage. If your browser account syncs extension data, those preferences may sync through the browser provider under that provider’s settings and policies.

  4. Website analytics and hosting

The ASCII Frame website is a static Cloudflare Pages target. The source currently does not embed third-party analytics scripts, third-party fonts, third-party video embeds, accounts, forms, payments, comments, or upload flows.

Cloudflare, as the hosting and security provider, may process normal request, security, and operational data. If Cloudflare Web Analytics is enabled for public launch, this page must disclose that before the site is announced publicly. The site should not claim "no analytics" while analytics are enabled.

  5. Support email

The public support channel is the address below. Emailing support sends the normal message metadata and body that email requires. Do not send sensitive video files, credentials, private keys, or anything you would not normally put in an email.

GitHub Issues are not presented as public support while the repository is private. Use the support page for the public contact path.

  6. Changes

This policy should be reviewed before public launch and whenever the extension permissions, analytics setting, support flow, or website architecture changes.
